Business in Redford Township
During my 12 years on the Board of Trustees, my 15 years serving on the Planning Commission, Site Committee and serving on the Board of Directors of Redford Township Chamber of Commerce as their Vice President, I know that local business is very important to Redford Township. We need to work hard to help them grown and bring in new business to our community.
There are many ways we can do this. We need to have a better working relationship with the Redford Township Chamber of Commerce and its over 70 years worth of experience. Finding ways to collaborate on projects and also sharing lists of businesses in the Township. This will help build a strong bridge between the Chamber and the Township and give businesses support.
Taxes are a concern to many of our business owners in our Township. I would want to have a forum inviting all the businesses to better understand the taxes they are charged and explore the possibility of how to increase their property values. I would also want to set up a meeting with our local realtors to get their input on the current market values. Discuss what we need to do to increase property values for not only our businesses but for residential property as well. This along with ongoing better communication with business owners should help with their concerns.
The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) area in our Township is also very important to our community. We need to increase awareness of development opportunities and business resources. Parking for businesses is necessary in this DDA and needs to be addressed by developing more parking areas as well as increasing awareness of parking options in the township. To make the DDA even more appealing, we should look at places to park bikes and continue to build on current events as well as new events such as; Taste Fests, Art Walks and more which could be held in the DDA area.
I will work to help develop Business Pocket Associations that could be several businesses on a main street or group of businesses in a Pocket area. They could present ideas on how to improve their area and present any concerns they might have. The other plus would be businesses could work together on common goals that would benefit their business and the Township.

Keeping Us Safe in Redford Township-Police and Fire/Rescue
Feeling safe where we live is very important to all of us whether it is at our home, at our children's school, our community parks or while we shop. We want to feel safe and know that when we make that 911 call we will get fast and professional response.
Living in our diverse community we need to recognize the fears that people of color face daily. These fears are being felt all across our country. We need to work with all the groups we have in Redford to find peaceful solutions to make Redford a safe place for all our residents.
Safety is essential to a strong and growing community. This is why it is so important to make sure our police and fire departments are fully trained, staffed and have the equipment they need.
We need to make certain to have a visible police presence in our neighborhoods. Neighborhood policing is a must and I will work with the Police Department on ways to make that happen. One way is expanding the Neighborhood Watch Program, that has become a huge success here in Redford thanks to Sergeant Mansfield.
The Police and Fire Departments involvement in our community at charity events also goes a long way toward getting the Departments and residents to know each other beyond their responding in a crisis.
In the fire department we need to look at maintaining our third rescue squad. This will help ensure that our residents get the help they need when they need it most.
There are other improvements we need to make as well, such as traffic signal generators. This will allow us to keep the traffic signals running during power failures. I will work with the schools and our departments to find
ways to educate our children about the opioid epidemic. Financing is always an issue, so I support having a grant writer to help us maximize our efforts.
When we enter the post COVID-19 virus economy we will have many challenges with the Township budget to overcome. We will need thoughtful, experienced leadership to help guide us through this difficult time. I have 12 years experience on the Township Board in contract negotiations and managing budget shortfalls during the Great Recession while still providing services to our residents and businesses. With your support I will work hard to achieve this for you every day.

Making Redford More Inclusive
Redford is a diverse community and it is important to find ways to assure all residents are included in our township to help it grow. To do this I will engage our community, by phone, email, social media and going into the neighborhoods to meet residents one on one. I will encourage residents in our Township to become engaged in our community and show them how to go about doing that.
I will provide information on all the boards, commissions, and committees and how to be considered for a position on them. When making recommendations I will make sure that they best represent our diverse community.
A very important part is to actively work with residents to rebuild our Neighborhood Associations. These groups provide a way for neighbors to get to know each other better. You will receive current information on
what’s happening where you live and allows residents a small group atmosphere to meet and talk with our elected officials.
Making sure business leaders are involved in this process is also important. I will work with township leadership, Redford Chamber of Commerce and all other businesses, to get engaged in the process and find ways so resident and business can co-exist as neighbors.
I will work with residents and businesses to help them resolve issues they might have by proactively providing information to minimize problems in the future. I will work until we have resolution and always listen to your concerns.

Know who is at Your Door
It seems like we have been living with the COVID-19 virus forever. Time has almost come to a standstill and every day seems the same. We worry we wait and all is quiet.
This unending loop was interrupted for me a few days ago when someone rang my door bell several times in a row. This surprised me because since the virus stay at home order weeks ago no one has been knocking at my door or ringing the doorbell. Without hesitation, I opened the door to see who was there. It was a gentleman wanting to sell me some lawn care. I told him to back away from my door and he shouldn’t be going door to door without a permit. He said thank you and moved along.
By itself the story seems pretty tame, it is not. People who knock on your door to try and sell you something must have a license issued by the clerk’s office. There is a background check done on each person. This helps to protect residents from scammers and people who may do them harm. The clerk’s office is closed due to COVID-19 virus so he could not possibly have gotten a license.
So you look before you open your door. If you don’t know who it is, don’t answer the door. If you are concerned for your safety call the Redford Police non-emergency number 313-387-2551. Make the call, the police will come out to make them leave. Don’t argue or try to follow them this could put you in danger. We have a great police force, make the call and stay safe.
Retired Redford Township Police Lieutenant Duane Gregg Endorsement
I have known Pat McRae since 2004. As a Trustee I always found Pat willing to listen and work to resolve issues in the Township. Pat has an extensive background in Redford, having served not only on the Board of Trustees, but on other commissions and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as volunteering for many events and charities. Pat’s dedication and commitment to the Township is known and respected by many. It has been my pleasure to work alongside Pat on several occasions over the years, and I look forward to continuing to work with him for many more. The upcoming year or two will be difficult because of COVID-19, and the Township will face some serious budgetary issues that will require some difficult decisions. As Supervisor, I believe that Pat will bring maturity, and a vast amount of experience to the Board of Trustees. Pat is willing to look at both sides of a problem and will work toward the best result for the residents, businesses and employees. I believe he will serve Redford well as our next Supervisor, and has my full support.

This Memorial Day
This will be a different type of Memorial Day this year. We will have limited family gatherings and no parades just the silence of the effects of the COVID-19 virus.
As I sit here, writing this, I am enjoying the sounds of birds chirping and the calm of the dusk of the day. It gives me pause and time to think of those who fought and died so we could enjoy our freedom. This holiday honors the men and women who died while serving in the US military and originated in the years following the Civil War.
I think of family we never knew that served, like my wife Betsy’s Great Uncle, who was a Seaman Second Class in the U.S. Navy on the USS Ticonderoga. His ship was sunk by a German submarine on September 30, 1918 during World War I. We were able to visit Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial in Paris honoring veterans from World War I and World War II this past October. They have grave sites and plaques for those who were lost at sea, her Uncle was one lost at sea.
We all have love ones, friends, and family we never met who served in the military and lost their lives defending us and our way of life. So as we approach the holiday lets pause for a moment and remember that even with the COVID-19 Virus and all the problems that come with it. We have the opportunity to hear the birds and enjoy the sunset because of those, know and unknown who gave their all. Yes, this is a different kind of Memorial Day.
Happy Memorial Day

Pat McRae Announces Run For Supervisor In 2020
Former Redford Township Trustee, Pat McRae has filed to run for Township Supervisor in 2020.
“This election is a time for unification, and I believe I can help unite the board.” McRae states.
McRae served on the Board of Trustees from 2004 through 2016. Experience that he feels gives him a leg up on the other candidates for the position.
“I served on the board during The Great Recession, and during 10 out of my 12 years we had to cut budgets while maintaining services for the residents. As we all recover from the Coronavirus we are going to have to be ready to make those same tough decisions.” said Pat McRae.
With no incumbent running this year Pat feels that there needs to be a candidate with experience to help lead the Township.
“The Township needs somebody that knows how to lead, and that’s what I do.” McRae commented.
McRae concedes that this campaign year is going to be different from past years.
“You are not going to be able to go door-to-door like in previous years. This is really going to be a campaign that is going to be fought on social media, and through mailing and phone calls. I see it as a challenge to communicate with the residents of Redford, and I will do my best to meet that challenge.” McRae added.
McRae looking for Township residents to support and vote for him when the Primary Election is held on August 4, 2020.
