As a UAW retiree I think of all the Union members who came before me. They fought and many died to create Unions that provide good wages, benefits, and safe working conditions.
Peter J. McGuire, a carpenter and Labor Union Leader came up with the idea to have a holiday to celebrate Labor Unionists. He proposed the idea to the New York Central Labor Union in 1882 and on June 28, 1894 the US Congress established Labor Day as a Federal Holiday.
Labor Day is dedicated to social and economic achievements of American workers and serves as an annual tribute to contributions to the Strength, Prosperity, and Well-Being of our country.
While you are enjoying Labor Day weekend please take a moment to remember all those who made it possible to not only have a holiday but good wages, benefits, and safe working conditions.
Have a safe and Happy Labor Day.
